Hotels Near Foundling Museum

Right up until the 1920's this building was dominated by the Foundling Hospital. The Foundling Hospital in was founded in 1739 by the philanthropic sea captain Thomas Coram. It was a children's home established for the "education and maintenance of exposed and deserted young children." The word "hospital" was used in a more general sense than it is today, simply indicating the institution's "hospitality" to those less fortunate. When the building was demolished in 1926, the children were moved to a new site in surrey.

The Foundling Museum opened in 2004 and tells the story of the Foundling Hospital, London's first home for abandoned children and of three major figures in British history: its campaigning founder the philanthropist Thomas Coram, the artist William Hogarth and the composer George Frideric Handel. This remarkable collection of art, period interiors and social history is now housed in a restored and refurbished building adjacent to the original site of the Hospital.
